Websites need backlinks if you want to push your way to the top of the search engines. They are not the only thing you need of course but you do need them.

Then choose a category and enter the captcha code and that is it. Your post will be pinged out to 83 different services for you.

OK. That was job one and it took maybe 35 seconds. Job number two is even easier. Go to indexkings.com and paste your URL or URLs into the box provided and click the “RAPID INDEX! button. Immediately it will submit your URLs to over 15,500 statistic websites and provide a free link back to your website page or post and gets your URLs indexed by Google very quickly.

Even better, you can submit a “complex” URL or list of complex URLs, that is inner posts and pages, as long as you make sure to check the “Complex URLs” box below the main box. This will post out to 579 websites. In other words you will be deep linking your website with up to 579 backlinks…another thing that Google loves! Time to accomplish this task? 10 seconds.

If you would like to know how to SEO a website from scratch, or even give your current websites a backlinking boost with a step-by-step guide that you can follow, then read on. Before we begin, I want to say, “forget about how to SEO a website”. You never SEO a website. You SEO a web page. When every web page on your website is optimized for the search engine, your website is considered optimized.

I’m am not trying to be pedantic, believe me! It’s just that it is important that you understand the difference. Having said that, lets see what we need to do, assuming you have a new website or blog, with a homepage and a couple of other content pages.

1) Set your target

In SEO, your target is the keyword phrase (anchor texts). This is where keyword research comes in. You need to decide what keyword phrase you want to optimize for EVERY web page that you wish to rank in the search engine. Every web page, (homepage is also a web page), should be optimized for one (or at most three) keyword phrase. Keep it tightly focused.

If you want to target more keyword phrases, you should add more web pages to your website, instead of trying to make one web page optimized for 10-20 different phrases. Remember to make yourself a goal because you will never hit the target if you don’t know what you are aiming at.

2) Get the fundamentals right

Check and make sure that the followings are correctly done for every web page:

  • - Content is unique, preferably with a good collection of relevant internal links.
  • - Keyword phrase found in title tag.
  • - Keyword phrase found in description meta tag.
  • - Keyword phrase found in the url (if possible).
  • - Keyword phrase found within the content.

3) Build backlinks to the homepage

The strategies to build backlinks to the homepage is different from the strategies to build backlinks to the internal pages for the following 2 reasons:

  1. Some link building methods can only be used to build backlinks to the homepage. An example is submitting your website to link directories.
  2. Some link building methods are too tedious and it’s almost impossible for you to do them for all your web pages. For example:
  • - Press release.
  • - Create pages in Blogspot, Squidoo, Hubpages and other social networking sites.
  • - Post comments in blogs.
  • - Post in forums.
  • - Social bookmarking.

Regardless of how tough or how tedious the methods are, do all of them for the homepage (we’ve discussed other methods of  how to get backlinks before). You need to give your website homepage a backlink boost in order to build up your website authority.

4) Build backlinks to the internal web pages

It’s almost impossible to build backlinks for every internal web page, unless you run a popular site with lots of people pinging and digging your pages. So let’s be realistic. Personally I will start with 5 internal pages and build backlinks to them.

I prefer to build backlinks to internal pages via just one method – article marketing. (I’m not too keen on spammy methods). Choose 5 internal pages, prepare 5 new articles, submit them to hundreds of article directories and build backlinks to these 5 internal pages. (Note: You should do this for the homepage too.)

Blasting Out MessagesTIP: HOW TO DOUBLE YOUR BACKLINKS: Submit an article to EzArticleLink, spin it and get your more backlinks. What I do to double the effect is take the raw spun article which has square bracket [your bit of text] and change it to curly brackets {your bit of text} and then submit it to SocialAdr.com.

This is how to do that. Copy and paste your title, summary and body of the article into notepad. Hit CTRL + H on your keyboard and change [ for{ and ] for }. The result looks like this:

All you do now is submit the new raw spun article to SocialAdr. Now you can get twice the amount of leverage from your article writing and spinning. Just remember to do it in this order. EzArticleLink first then SocialAdr because only EzArticleLink has a spinner.

Whenever time allows, find 5 other internal pages and repeat the process.

5) Be patient and spread your eggs

Search engines trust aged sites. Unless you buy an aged domain, there is nothing you can do about the age of your domain. All you can do is Step 1 to 4 and then….. wait, trusting that things will happen eventually. Like it or not, waiting is one of the most important process in SEO, that’s why it’s Step 5!

In the mean time, if you are building niche content websites, continue to build more sites, rinse and repeat Step 1 – 4. Some websites will turn out to be winners while some may barely survive. If you only plan to have one website and intend to live and die with it, then while waiting, you should establish other ways of getting traffic, such as traffic exchange and advertising. The whole idea is to spread your eggs.

HootSuite and Ping Fm

HootSuite - Social Media Dashboard It has been a very busy time lately updating a lot of sites with new themes and building new ones. I thought I would leave this one alone though because you all know what it looks like by now! Well I might change it a later, give it a bit of a Spring clean so to speak  but I ‘ll give you advance warning so you won’t be too shocked.

While I have been busy on that some of the other areas of my social marketing and communication has suffered. that was until I came across a very handy shortcut to managing my social network accounts.

I have been using ping.fm for quite a time. If you do not know it, it is a place where you can post anything from Tweet type messages and updates up to complete blog posts and articles out to 40+ other social networks. Yes it does take some time to set up but  you only have to do it once so do it gradually and you will find it is worth the effort.

Always on the look out for better ways to do things I came across HootSuite (I know, I am a bit slow sometimes). HootSuite does a similar job but more importantly I found a way of intergrating the two systems. It is not my idea, that credit belongs to Brian Wong. I recommend you visit his blog post on the subject. It has an incredibly long title but nonetheless it is pure gold and it costs nothing.

The basic recommendation is that if you keep your Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts  at HootSuite you can be a little more personal  and controlled whereas your more general updates can go out to all the other networks. You will then profit from far wider exposure in less time and build yourself 40 or more backlinks. Remember, this is all done from one post from your blog. Now that is a big time saver!

Whether or not you decide to buy Siphon X or not is up to you but while I was looking for ways to make my backlinking faster and better quality I came across Ryan Diess. I have only vaguely heard of this guy before, seen some of his stuff and never knew much about him.

He certainly is a good guy though and as if to prove it he is giving away Cherry Picker.

Cherry Picker is a great bit of software that provides keyword information for niche research and lets you spy on the backlinks of your competition at the same time. I use it a lot and it helps in my keyword research.

It is pretty impressive and works very well indeed.

Don’t Forget Your Backlinks!

Backlinking is a very important part of getting your website noticed on line. You will see in other posts here reference to it but if you do it the long, bit by bit route you are going to wear yourself out and get nowhere fast. Or at least it will take you forever to get there.

Fortunately I found a far better way and I have been testing it out for the last couple of weeks. As an aside, do NOT believe some of these people who tell you can set things up in five minutes or even a couple of hours, because you can’t!
